In a recent candid interview, former Porto star and Champions League winner, Benni McCarthy, unveiled his grand ambitions for the future, and they stretch far beyond the confines of local football.
“I’m looking towards La Liga or the Portuguese league,” McCarthy declared with unwavering confidence. “My goals are set much higher than helping teams like Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, or Sundowns. My ambitions are far beyond that.”
With three interviews already under his belt from different Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs, McCarthy’s eyes are firmly fixed on the international scene. As the MLS season wraps up with LA Galaxy and New York Red Bulls vying for the final victory, the rest of the teams are in off-season mode, assessing their strategies and potential coaching candidates.
“There were rumors about me joining Kaizer Chiefs, but they were just that—rumors,” McCarthy clarified. “I haven’t spoken to Sundowns, and there has been no dialogue between me and the team. They have experienced coaches there.”
Reflecting on his journey and future, McCarthy expressed his admiration for Erik ten Hag, one of the hardest-working managers he knows. “Erik’s dedication is unparalleled. He works tirelessly, often going to bed at 3 or 4 in the morning. His attention to detail is incredible, and it’s no wonder he expects things to go well. It’s relentless hard work,” McCarthy shared with SuperSport.
As McCarthy maps out his next move, it’s clear that his aspirations are set on a global stage, aiming to conquer new heights and leave an indelible mark on the world of football.
